Ajrakh: Ajrak is a hand block-printed textile that is resist-dyed using natural dyes. including indigo and madder. It is made by the Khatree community in Kutch, Gujarat and is identifies by its colors- blue and red, and its complex geometric floral patterns. It's name is derived from 'azarak', 'blue' in Arabic & Persian. A remarkable feature of ajrakh printing is that on a single fabric, using the same design, resist printing is combined with other printing and dyeing techniques. The whole process is repeated on both sides of the fabric in perfect cohesion, with unsurpassed skill. Ajrakh uses mud-resist and printing is repeated twice on the fabric to ensure brilliance of colour. Superimposing lends clarity and sharpness to the prints.
Bagru, Dabu & Sanganeri: Bagru printing is a traditional printing technique that is done using natural colours. It is a craft practiced by the 'chippas' community in a remote town of Rajasthan. Bagru printing is generally done on a blue or indigo background. This region is popular for two kinds of prints: Dabu prints and Bagru prints. Bagru printed fabrics are known for their characteristic black and yellow ochre or cream colour combinations. Sanganeri is a hand block printing technique originating from Sanganer, a village in the southern part of Jaipur, Rajasthan. The main distinguishing feature between Saanganer and Bagru printing is that Saanganer print is usually done on a white ground, whereas Bagru prints are printed on an Indigo or a dyed background. Local water also has its effects. In the water of Saanganer, the results of block printing are very rich dark shades of colour, while at Bagru one finds a reddish tinge in the block printed textiles. Water was abundant in Saanganer, due to which dyeing, printing as well as washing could be done very easily. In contrast at Bagru, where water is comparatively scarce, Dabu resist printing and indigo work is practiced more often. Traditionally, motifs printed at Bagru are large with bold lines, as compared to Sanganer, where somber colours and fine lines, intricate detailing are practiced. Saanganeri motifs are based on nature, while the motifs of Bagru are more often geometric.
