Drainpipe trousers, or straight pants have been known by many names over the decades. These include stovepipes, cigarette pants, pencil pants and gas pipes. They emerged into Western fashion in the 1950s, with popular Hollywood stars such as the singing cowboy Roy Rogers and actresses like Marilyn Monroe and Sandra Dee started wearing their pants very slim, only upto the ankle. Tapered trousers became most notable when Elvis Presley donned slim-fitting jeans and shocked the country.
In the early 1960s, drainpipes were worn by numerous rock bands and musicians, including The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan. Fashion icon Audrey Hepburn also raised the popularity of drainpipe pants. By 1962, slim fitting pants were worn ordinary people as well, and top consumer bards like Sears were selling tight jeans made from "stretch" denim that incorporated elastane.The trend was ousted when hippie culture gave rise to flared pants and bell bottom jeans in the 1970's.
Skinny Pants have continued into the 2010s, entering mainstream fashion. Since then, they have remained popular and eventually became one of the decade's defining fashion pieces for both men and women. They have become so popular that many men have expanded their wardrobe to include tight fitting chino trousers in a variety of neutral colors.
